Missouri Republican Rep. Sam Graves is raising questions about the safety of federal buildings in Kansas City and across the country. His concerns come in response to a report by the General Accountability Office, which found that the police force in charge of protecting most of the buildings is understaffed and demoralized.
“Thousands of people work there and tens of thousands of my constituents go into these buildings,” said Graves, the top-ranked Republican on the House Economic Development, Public Buildings and Emergency Management Subcommittee.
Graves received a mention in the Washington Post on Saturday for raising his concern during a hearing last week.
“Every major terrorist attack in this country has targeted a government-owned building, yet six years after Sept. 11, it appears these buildings are less secure,” he said. “How is it possible that the Department of Homeland Security has let this happen?”
